hydrangea2.jpg (26124 bytes) BIG LEAF HYDRANGEA

The Hydrangeas we are most familiar with is the big leaf variety Hydrangeas provide masses of show stopping color with their magnificent blooms. This variety of hydrangea has either pink or blue flowers. The color of the flower is determined by the pH of the soil. A high pH of 6.8 to 7.2 will produce pink flowers. A low pH of 5.0 to 6.0 will produce blue flowers. They should be grown in partial shade. After attaining size, these shrubs will flower throughout the summer. They prefer well-drained soil and benefit from deep watering during warm weather. Hydrangeas make exceptionally nice fresh-cut or dried flowers.

camillia2.JPG (354011 bytes) CAMELLIA

Camellias can serve several functions in the landscape including foundation plantings, screens, accent plants, background groupings and hedges. Maximum benefit can be achieved by mass plantings or groupings.
Camellias flower in the fall and winter when their display of colorful blooms is most appreciated. During the remainder of the year their evergreen foliage, interesting shapes and textures, and relatively slow growth make camellias excellent landscape plants.
Camellias perform best in partially shaded locations which are enhanced by good water drainage and air movement. A location that meets the basic cultural requirements will enable plants to withstand adverse conditions.

falopia2.jpg (118157 bytes) Fallopia Variegata

Fallopia Variegata looks very much like it could be a variegated form
of Polygonum japonicum var. compactum. It does spread, but it is in
no way as aggressive as its green leaved relatives. The new growth
starts out with pink and red highlights. As the rounded leaves mature
they have a wide irregular white variegation, tinted with pink. The
small creamy white flower spikes come in late summer. The bright
colors really brighten up a partially shady spot. Can be planted in a
bottomless container in the garden to keep it from spreading or can
be used as a container plant.
Growes to about 3-4’ tall and is hardy in Zone 4-9

forsythia_shrub_mc.jpg (29825 bytes) Forsythia/Yellowbell Bush

The early spring flower is the most appealing feature of this
plant. Flowers are usually profuse, and open before the leaves emerge
on the plant. With an unusually mild winter, bloom may occur as early
as late January, but usually occurs in March. Flowers will last for
two or three weeks unless killed by cold. The yellow flower color
varies with varieties, ranging from pale to deep yellow. The flowers
are 1¼ to 1½ inches long and wide, bell-like and produced in clusters.
They bloom on last year’s wood. Dark green leaves emerge shortly after
bloom. In the fall they may turn slightly yellow or burgundy, but
usually die off green.Zones: 4-8

redbud.JPG (1167709 bytes) EASTERN REDBUD (Cercis canadensis)

The eastern redbud is one of our most beautiful native ornamental
small trees. The pea-like pink flowers appear before the leaves or
just as they are unfolding. It is one of the first trees to flower
in early spring. It is also known as "Judas-tree." The flat pod is
two to three
inches long and hangs onto the twigs throughout the winter. Bright
reddish, pea-like blossoms are clustered along the twigs before the
leaf buds unfold.

Hear-shaped leaves identify this tree. They are dark green in summer,
turning yellow in autumn.

Bark is red-brown, separating into thin scales. Trees growing rapidly
will produce heavy flaking of bark, giving the trunk a diseased
appearance.
