Planting Waterlilies and Bog plants You need a 1 to 2 gallon plastic container for each plant ,baskets for waterplants are fine , I use old plastic flower pots. Line your container of choice with permeable fabric. Landscaping fabric has worked fine for me . You just want to keep the soil from leaching out of your pots. Next fill your container to 2 inch below the rim with any good dirt ,like topsoil or good garden soil(any soil that does not float is fine) Water the container filled with dirt very well, that helps settle the soil. Next set in your plant so that the crown is just at soil level; top with 1 inch of pebbles .Carefully place the container in at least 12 inches of water.Water lilies need as much sun as possible in order to bloom.I live in Zone 7 and have had great success with them planted in a shaded water garden that doesnt get but about 4 hours off direct sunlight. Winter care: Place your plant in the deepest part of your pond ( I would recommend at least 18 inches). As a rule I would say ,if your fish can survive the winter ,so can your water lilies . If however your pond freezes to the bottom, you would want to remove the plants and store them in a cool frost free are and keep the soil moist. Bog Plants Same as Waterlilies ,but may only need a small pot water from 1 - 6 in. over crown of plant depending in plant culture requirements |
